DNS has to work out where the website lives, certificates help confirm you’re talking to the right place, routers have to move the traffic across different networks and the server at the other end still needs to be alive and able to respond. We call all of this \u201cthe internet\u201d as if it were one big system, but it really isn’t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I find that quite fascinating because you can have a perfectly healthy application that suddenly looks completely broken because something much further down the chain has failed. A DNS issue or an expired certificate can be enough to make users think the entire service has disappeared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
That’s probably one of the things I enjoy most about IT. The better technology becomes, the less of it people actually see. Something that looks incredibly simple from the outside can have a ridiculous amount of engineering underneath it, and when we’ve done our job properly, nobody really needs to care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I think we take the internet for granted because, most of the time, it just works. You type a website into a browser and a second later you’re there.
